Month Three Report

Ah, March. We had a good month. Nina and Grampi joined us. The girls thrived under the extra attention. The sun shone almost every single day.  Brian and I got away to Queensland for four days. Nina and Grampi did an overnight to Hunter Valley wine country. We all went to Melbourne. You've all read and seen a lot about that.

This month the girls also got more settled at school. Emily decided she loves maths and begged to be allowed to work ahead in her take home math notebook. Her mind is whirling with all the new facts. She loves to do addition problems in her head. I went online and found some fun games for us to play like this Jelly Bean math exercise and some games involving dice.

Emily's reading has also taken off lately. She loves to sit and read us whole books. It's amazing when things like this start clicking. Her teacher puts a big emphasis on literacy and I can see it's paying off.

Tess thrives in school as well. I've been lucky enough to volunteer in her classroom twice a week for the last few weeks. I help the kids do literacy activities at the tables while Ms. Read works on reading with them in small groups. I also get to see them eat their fruit break. I love seeing Tess with all her buddies. Yesterday I even got to see Tess present her news - their version of show and tell. She spoke confidently and then finished by saying, "I will now take questions and comments." She called on a friend who said he liked her stuffed animal. She said, "That is a comment. I will now take a question." I love how she can be so tiny and still talk like such a grown up.

As I had feared, saying goodbye to Nina and Grampi was brutal. The night before they left the girls went to sleep sobbing. They even took a roll of toilet paper and put it between their beds so they could take turns getting up to blow their noses. Tess said they are the best grandparents ever and Emily cried that some of her friends have grandparents that live with them always and she wishes she could have that. I for one am thrilled that they have such an amazing connection.

With Nina and Grampi gone and Brian on his first business trip (back to the states!) things are pretty quiet around here. I've queued up some good crafts and fun outings so we can keep distracted. Yesterday we made homemade playdough together. Tomorrow night we have movie night at their school and Brian will be home by Tuesday.
