Rainy Saturday Zoo Outing

In Boston we enjoyed low key weekends at home. We liked to do projects around the house or just relax. Here we feel the urgency to get out and do something each weekend so the rainy ones tend to get us down. Today we considered heading to the Australian Museum but we remembered how chaotic we found the Powerhouse Museum last time we attempted an inside outing on a rainy day. So instead, we suited up and decided to head to the zoo.

With our zoo membership we can afford to do a quick visit but so far we find we still have a lot of new things to see. Today we happened to see the zookeeper feeding the giraffes. We had no problem obtaining great seats for the fascinating seal show. The girls even got to pet a guinea pig.

We also discovered a great playground area where the kids could climb. I find the playground equipment in Australia much more interesting and challenging than our standard fare in the US. They seem to offer a lot of climbing opportunities. I like to see our cautious girls test their limits a bit.

The kids area also featured a water play area. We already had boots on and today the kids had the whole area to themselves. When the rain came back we put our umbrellas up or hid under an enclosed area.

We found many of the animals more active in the cool weather as compared to our last hot and sunny visit. We even got to see a kangaroo with a joey in her pocket. Somehow I always picture joeys poking their heads out but this time all we could see were two little feet and an extra tail. It looked quite odd. Imagine our surprise when we saw the size of the joey after he came back out.

Add to the day a visit to another cool coffee shop and it makes for a pretty great family day. We found Avenue Road Cafe in Mosman through online reviews. The food was excellent and the decor funky. Check out the standing lamps that they hung from the ceiling.

The weather even cleared up enough to do bedtime book reading on the balcony.
